Alcohol and Drug Policy

The University of Minnesota drug free university policy states that “Students, faculty, and staff are prohibited from engaging in ... the illegal possession, use, or distribution of alcohol, drugs, and drug paraphernalia on all University premises, in University-supplied vehicles, and as part of University activities and business.”  Note that the University prohibits the use of marijuana and other cannabis products in connection with any University activities.

In addition to adhering to these broader University guidelines, MELP faculty and staff should comply with specific restrictions regarding alcohol and drug use while working. MELP employees should never:

  • report to work under the influence
  • consume alcohol or drugs while in the office, teaching in the classroom, or interacting with current students on or off campus (whether the event is MELP-sponsored or not)
  • allow students to be served at MELP-sponsored events
  • operate, use, or drive any vehicle for MELP purposes while under the influence

Faculty or staff who violate this policy are subject to discipline, up to and including termination.
