Internet Identity & Email

Internet ID and Password

What Is My Internet ID?

Your Internet ID (x.500) is a unique identifier created by the University from letters in your last name and, most often, several digits. You will receive your x.500 as soon as you have been entered by CCAPS payroll staff into the University data system. You will use the x.500 along with your password to log in to the many University services available to you via the Internet. You (and everyone else) can look up your Internet ID and other public information on One Stop (onestop.umn.edu), your central University information resource.

Setting and Changing Your Password

To activate your password for your Internet ID, go to the Claim My Account page or call the University Twin Cities Technology Helpline (612-301-4357). Select the password option. Identify yourself as CCAPS faculty. If you forget your password, call this same number. The Helpline cannot retrieve it, but a staff member will assist you in going through the process of setting a new one. If you know your password and want to change it, you can do so online. Go to the My Account page and click on Password Management.

Password Security

Your password is known only to you, so be sure you record it securely. Also be aware that no official tech/OIT staff will ever ask for your password, and you should never give it to anyone. Phishing emails (ones asking you to reply back with your password and other personal information) have been coming more and more frequently to University email addresses.

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has more information on accounts and passwords including DUO two factor authentication.

University E-mail Account

All MELP faculty, students, and staff have basic University of Minnesota Google email accounts, "Your x.500@umn.edu." Your email can be used as soon as you activate your Internet ID password. In addition to Gmail, the University partnership with Google has given the University community access to Google Apps, a suite of state-of-the-art communication and collaboration tools. MELP faculty and staff are all expected to use Google Calendar to help with scheduling meetings and events.

Check University E-mail on the Web

You can access your University email remotely via any Internet browser at any location. Go to U of M's Gmail. Then and log in with your Internet ID.

Why Use University E-mail?

MELP faculty should always use their University email for University-related correspondence. This address identifies you as a University employee. News and updates from the University are sent only to @umn.edu addresses. Your @umn.edu address is posted on One Stop as your contact email address for students and others. MELP will send all communications to you through your University email.

Students Must Use University E-mail

Because all official University of Minnesota communication goes through email, students are required by University policy to use their University email accounts. All correspondence should be sent to the student's University email.

Updating Your Personal Information

Go to the MyUPortal, log in with your Internet ID, and click on "My Info."  Using the "Edit" icons, you can change a variety of personal information. You can also suppress information you do not want displayed in OneStop search results.  If there is something you can not edit, such as your office address, contact the MELP Program Coordinator.

Google Account Termination Timeline

University policy for Google Workspace accounts states that after 21 days of not being employed at the University, employees’ Google accounts will be closed.  Ability to sign on to single sign-on University services continues for 42 days, but some access (e.g., Zoom, WiFi, door access) ends immediately. Instructors who are unsure of their continued employment at the university should be sure to save personal files and email messages they will need in another location. They should use the MELP Faculty Work Shared drive for course materials linked in Canvas that future instructors will need.

Technology Help

If you need additional assistance with your University Internet ID, password, email, or web space usage, contact the OIT Helpdesk.
