Class Registration

Class Information

The University of Minnesota uses PeopleSoft software for human resources purposes and also for student administration, including class registration. Faculty members typically do not have direct access to PeopleSoft, but the system generates output reports (Class Schedule and Class Lists) that give them access to essential information. Most information in these reports is updated overnight, so that changes made one day will appear the following day. If for any reason you require "real-time" information, contact the ELP Program Associate with your inquiry.

Class Schedule

Information on class section availability, including enrollment, closed classes, cancelled classes, and added classes, is available to all through MyU.  Enrollment numbers and class closings do post on a real-time basis on the Class Schedule, in sync with the registration process.

Class Lists

Current and past semester class lists are available through MyU.  Once in MYU you can select the TEACHING link on the left navigation bar or Key Links (in top navigation) and then Faculty Center. Instructors may log in to the system using their Internet ID and password. After the class has begun, it also includes withdrawal (WTH) information. You can download the list as an Excel spreadsheet or a text file.

Registration

Permission Numbers for Academic English Program (AEP) courses

Giving out permission numbers: Instructors are usually not involved in giving out permission numbers. Instead, permission numbers for courses are handled by ELP students services staff. Staff ensure that students who are required to take classes can get into a class, and that the class is the right level for any students registering for a class. Sometimes students will email an instructor directly for a permission number. Please forward these requests to the ELP Student Services Specialist or [email protected].

Wait Lists

When an ESL class reaches the enrollment cap, a wait list notification will appear in the online registration system, if a wait list has been set up for your class. Interested students can add their names to the wait list by contacting the front desk at ELP. Refer wait list questions to the Student Services Specialist who will contact the student when space becomes available to give out a permission number to enable registration.

Registration and Withdrawal Deadlines

Registrations

Registrations can occur without instructor permission through the first week of the semester (although registrations after the class has begun incur a late fee if it is the student's first registration of the semester). Late registrations in AEP courses can occur throughout the second week, these can be elective students (usually with instructor permission) or students required to take the class that have had a permission number but not used it until week 2. If you want to approve a late registration during that period, notify the ELP Student Services Specialist or the International Student Advisor first to verify that the student can be given a permission number.  Permission numbers do not work after the third week—registrations occurring this late require a petition process.

Withdrawals

If a student withdraws from your class, that space becomes immediately available to another student (if the date is within the class-add guidelines and if the enrollment cap on the class has not been reached). Students may drop a class without instructor permission any time during the first 10 weeks. Withdrawals after that time require a petition.
