Class and Lab Scheduling

Class Section Cancellation

A class section may be cancelled prior to the start of the semester by the College of Continuing and Professional Studies (CCAPS) because of low enrollment (the minimum is usually 6 students). Faculty and enrolled students are notified immediately by MELP in this event. Faculty are not compensated for cancelled courses unless they have attended the first day of class, in which case faculty are paid half of the prep fee for that class. Students are immediately notified by the PeopleSoft system when a course is cancelled.

Class Schedule

Information on your current or upcoming class is posted on One Stop. To find your class:
  1. Select the correct semester in the drop-down menu. Usually the current semester and the upcoming one or two semesters are posted. A semester marked as preliminary is still tentative.
  2. Select designator (ESL, UC, etc.) and number of your class.
  3. Click View.
  4. Classroom-based classes are listed first. Scroll down for the Online classes listed at the bottom half of the page under a pale yellow panel titled Online and Distance Learning Courses (ODL). Under each of these two headings, classes are sorted by class designator and number.

*Note that after the Upgrade Class Schedule information can be found via MyU.  You can also watch the "How to Search for Classes" tutorial.

Classrooms

Most ESL classroom classes are offered on the U of M East bank campus, and occasionally on the West bank campus. Visit your classroom and familiarize yourself with the equipment available prior to the start of classes.

Classroom reservations are made by the Office of Classroom Scheduling according to the schedule provided by the MELP office. It is sometimes possible, however, to make adjustments after a room is assigned. Any special room or equipment requests, or requests for room changes, should be made to the MELP Program Associate.

Online you can find and print the following information:

Language Labs

Instructors are responsible for reserving rooms for language lab use at the CLA Language Center in Jones Hall.

MELP guidelines for scheduling labs:

  • Before the start of the semester check with the instructors who are teaching in your level to avoid scheduling labs on the same day for Oral Skills, Reading and Composition, and Grammar.
  • The Language Center usually limits lab reservations for 20 hours a semester per course, so plan accordingly. Some instructors prefer to reserve an hour of lab per week (for a 10-hour course) and others prefer 2 full hours every other week.
